The Union of Smyrniots in collaboration with the National Historical Museum, inaugurates the exhibition entitled "Smyrna of Greeks" on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 8.00 pm in the Old Parliament Building (Stadiou 13, Kolokotroni Square).

The material presented in the exhibition derives in large part from the collections of the Union of Smyrniots, and includes books, newspapers, magazines, photographs, portraits and other relics that were saved from the flames and destruction of Smyrna in 1922.

Are also displayed, the vestments of the Metropolitan of Smyrna, Chrysostomos, memorabilia of commander in chief Leonidas Paraskevopoulos, Greek flags of the military command of Smyrna and the desk of Adamantios Korais from the collections of the National Historical Museum.

The exhibition aims to present to the Athenian and the general public, aspects of Greek life in Smyrna, mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries up to 1922. The exhibits show the leading role of the local community in science, education, letters, the arts, economy, trade, sports, social welfare and generally in all activities,  and demonsrate a developed society with strong national and spiritual foundations. The remains of this flourishing culture displayed in the exhibition, offer today’s visitor an introduction to this centre of Asia Minor Hellenism within the Ottoman Empire.
