The Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece - National Historical Museum (HESG/NHM), the Public Benefit Foundation "Maria Tsakos" - International Centre for Naval Research and Tradition and Piraeus Bank are pleased to announce that the floating exhibition of relics of the Museum’s Collection about the Greek Revolution of 1821, which was postponed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place this year, starting from the Port of Chios, on Sunday, June 26, 2022.
The exhibition is part of the versatile anniversary programme of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece - National Historical Museum which commemorates 200 years since the beginning of the Greek Revolution, under the title "Revolution 21 Reframed: the Floating Exhibition".
The exhibition will sail to 20 ports of various Greek islands with the sailing educational vessel "Mania" offered kindly for this purpose by the Tsakos Enhanced Education Nautical School of the "Maria Tsakos" Public Benefit Foundation. The Exhibition will be sometimes accompanied by units of the Navy and the Coast Guard and a flotilla of private vessels.
For its part, Piraeus Bank, has integrated this original floating exhibition in its versatile anniversary programme "eleftheroi" [free], and supports the organisation and realisation of it, as well as the creation of the HESG/NHM commemorative medal.
The exhibition aims to highlight the naval part of the Greek Revolution of 1821, with authentic relics from the Museum's collections (e.g. the cross from the ship of Miaoulis, the grab from the torpedo boat of Kanaris, naval weapons, philhellenic objects dedicated to the naval struggle,. etc.) as well as with digital methods (for example: short videos, digital representations of naval battles, prints, etc.).
The narrative of the exhibition starts by describing the naval Greek tradition in the pre-revolutionary years and the first steps towards the creation of credible Greek units that could fight against the dominant Ottoman fleet. It will highlight the naval sites, historical islands, critical events and figures of the naval part of the Revolution and will conclude with historical documents that will encourage our visitors to reflect on the impact of the Navy for the Greek Nation nation and for Europe in general.
The naval sites that the Exhibition will visit include, apart from Chios (Chora and Kardamyla), Oinousses, Psara, Lesvos, Lemnos, Samothrace, Agios Efstratios, Skyros, Andros, Syros, Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Aegina. The exhibition will conclude in Piraeus. Residents and visitors from the above ports will have the opportunity to visit the Exhibition and to participate in related anniversary events, which will be organised by local organisations and Piraeus Bank.
The Exhibition, which will be open to the public, will be accompanied, not only by the Curators and Conservators of the National Historical Museum, but also by Mrs. Maria Efthymiou, Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, who kindly offered to give a series of lectures on the decisive contribution of the Navy to the successful outcome of the Greek War of Independence.
Even though the project of the floating exhibition is very original and innovative, it is not without precedent in the long history of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece, which, in a similar way, collected, in the first years of its public presence in 1884, valuable relics that shaped the collections of the National Historical Museum.
The exhibition is complemented by a scholarly catalogue entitled "The Naval Struggle of 1821", a valuable co-publication of the HESG/NHM and the “Maria Tsakos” Public Benefit Foundation, one of the most important contributions to the 2021 anniversary publications.
